A brief history of the N.W.M.P. Commemorative Association

The N.W.M.P. Commemorative Association (N.W.M.P.C.A.) is not connected to, or affiliated with, any police or security force, nor any police or security veterans or fraternal organizations.

Based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the Commemorative Association is made up of volunteers from throughout Alberta doing volunteer work for the benefit of all Canadians.

The Association's by-laws were first adopted in December of 1985, and incorporated under the Societies Act of the Province of Alberta in February of 1986.
The N.W.M.P.C.A. is also recognized under the Canadian Charitable Registrations Act.

The goal of the N.W.M.P. Commemorative Association is to promote the history of the North-West Mounted Police through personal appearances, in historically accurate uniforms and tack, through re-enactments, and other public events.

A Mobile Museum brings the colourful history of the N.W.M.P. to all generations, through public presentations.
As a non-profit organization, support is derived from donations by groups or sponsors who request the various Divisions of the N.W.M.P.C.A. to appear at their special events.

From the beginning, the group has worked co-operatively with, and made donations to, numerous organizations such as:

  • The former Cochrane Ranch Provincial Historical Site, and Western Heritage Centre
  • The Canmore Centennial Museum
  • Canada Day Celebrations
  • Calgary's Heritage Park
  • The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede
  • the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site
  • The Riders of the Plains
  • Fort Macleod, Fort Calgary, Fort Walsh, Fort Steele, Fort Edmonton Park, Banff
  • To many other groups who celebrate the proud history of the North-West Mounted Police.
NWMPCA Mounted Patrol

The N.W.M.P.C.A. Mounted Patrol and Democrat annually participate in many local community parades and special venues.
Members of the Troop have also volunteered their time with groups like the Children's Wish Foundation and Udderly Art Foundation in Calgary.

The Mobile Museum is a work in progress.
There is no charge for admission and it is supported solely through visitor's donations.
Future plans call for enhanced audio-video, plus, the acquiring of additional artifacts and replicas.
Over the years, the North-West Mounted Police Commemorative Association has traveled extensively with their Mobile Museum and Mounted Patrol to locations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Several years ago, the N.W.M.P.C.A., with corporate help, produced an historical video of the North-West Mounted Police and their contributions to the development of the Canadian West.
Members of the Association and other regional re-enactment troops made up the performers for this project.
This video is still much in demand by schools and libraries in the three most western provinces, and is provided free of charge to school divisions.
With the help of new donors it is hoped that a second of three planned video volumes on the history of the North-West Mounted Police will be produced.

Other future plans include working with the Calgary Stampede, Spruce Meadows, the R.C.M.P. Musical Ride, the Treaty 7 Nations, Fort Walsh Historical Park, the Mounted Forces Association of Canada, the Legion of Frontiersmen and the U.S. 7th Cavalry Mounted Commemorative Unit.

If you know of any historical artifacts, photos, or documents pertaining to the N.W.M.P. or R.N.W.M.P. from 1873 to 1920, please let us know.
